Post-Labor Day Blazes
FDNY was hard at work
just after Labor Day when
not one, but two fires broke
out locally in the early
morning hours of Tuesday,
September 6.
Just after midnight, a call
came in regarding a high-
rise fire on the 5th floor of a
13-story occupied building
located at 453 Beach 40th
Street. Twenty units with
78 firefighters responded to
the scene, with the first ar-
riving about four minutes
after the call was made. The
fire was under control by
12:35 a.m. There was one ci-
vilian who was taken to St.
John’s Episcopal Hospital
with serious, but non-life
threatening injuries due to
smoke inhalation.
The firefighters didn’t have
much time to rest as at 2:55
a.m., another call came in
for a boat fire at Marina 59.
Twelve units with about 60
firefighters responded to
the call within four minutes.
Seven boats were on fire at
the marina, some which were
part of the Boatel business,
so some of the occupants
were sleeping at the time of
the blaze. Only one civilian
had a serious but non-life
threatening injury and re-
fused medical assistance.
The fire was under control at
4:28 a.m.
Both incidents are un-
der investigation by the Fire
