The Rockaway Times
*****
This September 11th is the 15th
anniversary of that most horrific
day. It was said then and should
be said forever: Never forget.
Never forget the lives that were
lost; never forget the heroism of
so many; never forget that we are
one nation, indivisible. And may
we never forget to stand up and
defeat those who seek to terrorize
and do us harm. Never, ever, ever
forget.
*****
On Sunday, September 11th
therewill be ceremonies at Tribute
Park. SeemoreonPage 18.
*****
Sometimes
we
forget
to
send praise to the good (often
anonymous) citizens among us.
We knowaman cleans up the bus
stop at Beach 169th rather than
waiting for DOT or the National
Park Service and a fireman
on Beach 116th is often seen
sweeping the street well beyond
the firehouse. We know there’s
a one-woman army picking up
trash on the beach in the 80’s just
about every morning. Kudos for
their efforts!
*****
And kudos to the many locals
who do unofficial lifeguarding
(life saving). There are many
instances where locals rush
in to save people – even when
lifeguards are on duty.
*****
Knock on wood. We don’t want
to tempt fate. But what hurrica
ne? Hermine was a gift. Some
people were calling it The Perfect
Storm. Or Best Hurricane Ever.
The weather was beautiful, no
lines at the concessions, beaches
were wide open, except to
swimmers.
*****
The annual North Channel
Yacht Club Fishing Tournament
is Saturday, September 17 with
a start time at 7 a.m. All are
welcome. The sign-up meeting
isThursday, Sept 15 from7-9 p.m.
at 16-22 Channel Road in Broad
Channel. Rules will be outlined
at themeeting.
*****
The beaches will be open this
weekend, the season extended
by the City an extra weekend.
Becausemany lifeguards areback
at school or no longer available
the open beaches will be limited,
however.
*****
Cops and PEP officers were
out in droves on Sunday telling
surfers they were not allowed
in the water. Many went in
anyway. Or were already in the
water when law enforcement
showed up. Some surfers got
summonses andwill have to go to
court. Surfers live for such days
and should be free to ride the
waves. Common sense should
guide surfers about whether they
are experienced enough to go
out in big surf. We can’t police
everything! And “safety” is too
often a cop out. You want people
to be safe? Outlaw cars. Order
people to stay inside all the time.
Enoughwith the nanny crap.
*****
We didn’t know what caused
sand flies to suddenly appear
and attack. Well, we were chided,
castigated, and upbraided for our
ignorance by sandfly experts. We
must’ve been absent from sand
fly school the day they taught us
that flies come with winds from
thenorthwhereall thosemarshes
are home to the little pests.
*****
Yes, we insist the summer’s still
here but some real life realities
are poking their heads like
community board meetings! The
next meeting is set for Tuesday,
September 13 at the Knights of
Columbus at 7:15 pm.
*****
We haven’t seen much about
an event scheduled for Thursday,
September8but it’scalledClimate
Revolution and it’s supposed to
be a rally, a concert, and a film.
It’s at 94th street and the beach
and it’s from5:30 – 10 p.m.
*****
September 13 is primary day.
State Senator James Sanders has
a serious challenger in Adrienne
Adams, who has the backing of
the Queens Democratic Party.
