streets in Far Rockaway), Flor-
ence Ferguson from Friends of
B59 Playground Association.
Other local residents expressed
their concerns about the need
for speedbumps on B60 and
B62, lack of parking on RBB
(B98-99) and dog feces on the
beach (B96).
Jose Velez from the CB Parks
and Public Safety Committee
closed the meeting by discussing
three issues. The first was the De-
partment of Parks Enforcement
Patrol (PEP)whowillbetheshore-
linepatrol from6-9pmduring the
beach season. They will have ap-
proximately 36 Park Security Of-
ficers, who do not have the power
to arrest anyone andwill basically
ask people to get out of the water.
There will be nine peace officers
that have the capability of issuing
summonses and arresting peo-
ple. This staff is responsible for all
of theRockaways.TheCommittee
has asked the City for more PEP
officers as well as details on how
they will be deployed.
The topic of kayaks on the
ocean was discussed as there are
no landing facilities on the beach.
This will be discussed at the next
meeting.
The most popular issue dis-
cussed during this segment was
the bikes on the boardwalk. The
Parks department has agreed to
allowbikes on the boardwalk sev-
en days a week with no time re-
strictions.CB14passed this after a
15-minute debate onwhether the
appropriate signage for the bike
lanes should be displayed. The
DOT representative at the meet-
ing could not commit to putting
signage on the entire boardwalk.
The committee moved on to
the $1.5M allotted to the hand-
ball courts by the boardwalk from
B103-B105. There will be eight
courts, a 16-foot fence and three
separate entrances among other
amenities. The implementation
design is scheduled to be com-
pleted in 2017 and construction
sometime in 2018. The design
presented to the committee in-
cluded everything that was dis-
cussed in the prior workshop.
The next monthly board meet-
ing is on May 10 at the Knights
of Columbus Hall located at 333
Beach 90th Street at 7:15 p.m.
