Although it takes some
effort to find the 2015 test
results for your child’s in-

do so by going to www.p12.

This is a PDF file nearly
2000 pages long. District
27 school results begin on
page 1024. Charter school
results are found there as
well. Charter schools are
public schools adminis-
tered by private boards un-
der contract to the city.
Private
and
parochial
schools must teach children
according to Common Core
standards as well. Howev-
er, the testing schedule is
different. Catholic schools
within the Brooklyn Dio-
cese used the same stand-
ardized tests on the same
days the past two weeks,
but only grades 4, 6 and 8
were tested. Individual pri-
vate schools may or may not
choose to make their scores
on the tests public. The
reason private schools have
different rules is “compli-
cated” stated the State DOE
spokesperson. Those dif-
ferences will be explained
in a future article.
The Federal No Child Left
Behind Act of 2001 sup-
ported standard-based ed-
ucation reform with the
premise that setting high
standards and establishing
measurable goals could im-
prove individual outcomes
in education. In 2013, NYS
redesigned
assessment
tests to align with national
Common Core standards.
It was one of the first states
to do so.
To date, roughly 60 to 70
percent of our students do
not meet those standards.
Results of last year ’s tests
did not reach schools un-
til late July or early August.
The
state
spokesperson
said this year ’s results may
be published sooner than
last year.
Keep the Dragon Boat Alive
By Katie McFadden
The Dragon Boat has been
slayed and is in need of a life
preserver. The colorful vessel
that makes its way around Ja-
maica Bay was severely dam-
aged by 60 mph winds during
a storm in early April. Her
supporters are hoping to bring
her back to life, but they could
use some help.
Her real name is “The Drag-
onfly’s Banquet,” but is affec-
tionately known as the “Drag-
on Boat.” The dragon-inspired
vessel was designed by Pop-
pa Neutrino and built in the
1990’s. Poppa Neutrino aka
David Pearlman was a musi-
cian, philosopher, environ-
mentalist and raft builder who
once made a trans-Atlantic
voyage on one of his self-
made vessels. Poppa Neutri-
no died in 2011. Dragonfly’s
Banquet was built in the win-
ter of ’95-’96 in Provincetown,
