The Rockaway Times
MEMORIAL DAY PARADE
From The American Legion
On Monday, May 30, 2016 The American Legion Daniel M. O’Connell Post # 272 will host its annual
Memorial Day Parade. The day will commence with a Memorial mass at 10:30am on Beach 129 Street at
Saint Francis de Sales Church. At the conclusion of services, a ceremony will be held at the Four Chaplains
monument outside the church.
We will then assemble and the parade will proceed to 121 Street for a ceremony at the Jewish War Vet-
erans Memorial Circle. Upon conclusion of our services there, the parade will proceed to the Doughboy
monument at Veterans Memorial Plaza at Beach 94 Street for a memorial service.
Following the reading of the names of those from the Rockaway community who gave their lives in ser-
vice to our great country, we will retire to the Knights of Columbus hall on Beach 90 Street for refreshments
and hot dogs.
Memorial Day is the most solemn of days for Veterans as we remember the brave men and women who
made the supreme sacrifice to defend and preserve freedom around the world. We are well aware that
the Memorial Day weekend has become the official opening of the “summer season” and many people are
busy attending and hosting their BBQs. We, as Legionnaires, do not march for ourselves but for those who
gave there all for a grateful nation, we would be grateful for a robust turnout.
I would like to give a special thanks to Monsignor Bracken, The Ancient Order of Hibernian s (AOH) Divi-
sion 21, the Rockaway Irish Boys (RIBS) and The Knights of Columbus for there support and participation in
this parade and all other organizations who help to make this day successful.
We cordially invite you to join us on this day of remembrance as we, for the 98th year in a row, honor
our fallen comrades.
