Tuesday, June 28 is the Congressional Primary election from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.. You can vote for the Democratic candidate for the congressional seat in District 5, currently held by Congressman Gregory Meeks. He is being challenged by Ali Mirza who stopped the Rockaway Times to introduce himself.
Tell me about yourself.
I am a resident of Elmont since October 1991. I came to America in 1984 as a student and went to the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. I am married to my wife, Joy and have two great daughters, my youngest being just 3 years old.
Explain your experience as a small business owner:
I owned an insurance agency Mirza Group, Inc. from 1991 until 2010. Now I am in PR and business consulting since 2013. My current business is Mirza Strategies and Public Relations, Inc.
Do you have any prior political experience?
I am the former Director of Minority and Women Business Enterprise in Nassau County. I conducted a disparity study and developed a plan to increase the participation of Women and Minority owned businesses in obtaining government contracts by 100% within a short period of time. I am also a former Vice Chairman of the Nassau County Democratic Party.
Why are you running for Congress?
I am running because of the sheer urgency of NOW. Our political system is getting increasingly corrupt, our elected officials are heavily influenced by big money and are increasingly under the influence of lobbyists and big corporations. Residents are constantly ignored. Many politicians are already in jail - and many more are under investigation. I am not a career politician. I am a businessman with honesty and integrity - a progressive who will give true representation to the ENTIRE district.
What makes you a good candidate?
I am not lazy and corrupt. I have many fresh, great ideas. Meeks has been missing in action for 18 years. He is busy traveling outside the district on taxpayers' dime. He has abandoned our communities. I am the change that will help stop the bleeding and build our future on a solid foundation.
What are some of the issues you stand for?
I propose "loan forgiveness" to those who are heavily indebted by college loans. I propose that future loans must be completely interest free. I will work to ban corporations like United Technologies for shipping our jobs abroad, from getting billions of dollars in defense contracts. I will reward businesses that create good paying jobs for America with incentives. I will divert our resources from building jails to building schools and from perpetual wars to building necessary infrastructure. Reforming the criminal justice system, Ending "Citizen United" and the role of corrupt money in politics, Promoting diplomacy to resolve conflicts with other nations, Passing comprehensive immigration reforms without breaking the families in the process and without compromising our national security, Women's and LGBT rights are my other big goals.
What do you hope to do for Rockaway?
I will always be around to listen to the Rockaway community and ALL communities in my district. I will be your spokesperson and will work with you on ALL issues, even on the local, county and state issues NOT under the jurisdiction/powers of a congressperson. I will make sure that we have enough safeguards built to prevent the repeat of the kind of suffering, loss and damages caused by Hurricane Sandy, from ever happening again.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
