Maybe you've tried shopping on Black Friday. Maybe you've tried eating all those leftovers. Well, how about trying something completely different?
On Saturday night, November 26 check out the Rockaway Beach Surf Club as they present Cardone’s Beach Bunny Burlesque. RBSC is located at 302 Beach 87th, right at the corner of Rockaway Freeway, and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free, and there is no cover or drink minimum.
The show is hosted by master magician, promoter and showman Adam “The Amazing Cardone.” Known for his freewheeling magic tricks and standout escape artist antics, he first played the RBSC several years ago, performing as part of a circus cabaret which highlighted an artistic exhibition dedicated to Playland and Rockaway’s long amusement park history.
What can people expect next Saturday at RBSC? “A really fun show that features magic, great drinks, and NYC’s best burlesque acts.”
The audience, while adult, typically spans the ages and brings people together for a rowdy but playful night out. “It’s also both men and women,” Cardone points out. “Lots of couples on dates come out. You would never go to a strip club with your significant other, but to a burlesque show, yes!! It's very different.”
Host Cardone’s magic and escapism will introduce and bookend performing artists Lilin Lace, Velvetina Taylor and Penny Wren, all of whom are well-known on the city’s burlesque circuit. Each will bring an impressive athletic agility, a plethora of colorful costumes, daring dance routines, comedy, personality and a variety of music including rock and roll, surf rock and more to entertain their audience.
“I had no idea what to expect,” one man said who attended one of the first packed shows at the Surf Club, “but it was just a really wild, fun, entertaining show!”
Burlesque itself dates to the 1860’s, when Lydia Thompson and her British Blondes brought an irreverent English flair to American variety stage shows in costumes considered very revealing for the time.
As Cardone noted in an earlier interview, “In the old days a burlesque show featured striptease but it also had comedy and variety show elements in the show. Modern burlesque dancers…are there to put on an entertaining show that features amazing costumes, a bit of comedy and excellent skills at striptease. Burlesque has become very popular in all the major cities and I think its popularity has grown because it's not a ‘guys’ night out’ thing anymore. Men and women can watch the show together and laugh, feel a bit naughty and enjoy it.”
“I and Bradach Walsh, one of the owners of the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, had been wanting to bring a bit of the Manhattan night life that I am a part of out here to Rockaway,” he said. So, in late November 2015, they presented what was billed as the first burlesque show in Rockaway in modern times.
“I think we did four shows last winter/spring,” he said. “Ever since the last one people have been asking when is the next one!!! The performers love performing out here too.
“The audiences out here are really amazing! They’re really receptive, kind, and full of excitement. A performer’s dream!”
Besides becoming a Rockaway regular, Cardone, along with Walsh, created, organized and launched the first annual Rockaway Beach Sideshow and Strongman Festival this past summer on the boardwalk.
But for now he is facing his own challenges when it comes to the upcoming Cardone’s Beach Bunny Burlesque show at the Surf Club.
“The magic I do fits into the type of show it’s featured in. For burlesque shows it needs to be loud, over the top and good because,” he explains, “I am competing with pretty girls!”BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
