Run the town red.  Saturday is the Santa Shuffle, a fun race / walk that kicks off at 11 a.m. on Beach 126th Street and the boardwalk.  Sign up is from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales on Beach 129th.  Everybody who signs up for the 5K run gets a Santa suit.

Full steam ahead.  The construction schedule for the new medical center coming to Beach 105 (the old Keyfood site) calls for piles in mid-January, sewers, some plumbing and electric the next couple of months, walls, floors and stairs in April, the roof in May. Interior framing in June. And BUILDING OCCUPANCY BY SEPTEMBER 16! Sounds ambitious but it’s a real plan.

Riders on the Q35 last week had a surprise ending as the bus drove up onto the curb at Beach 116th Street and Newport last Thursday a little before noon.  The driver and the six passengers onboard were not hurt. And fortunately no one was on the sidewalk when it happened.  See the picture on Page 38.  The bus took out a portion of the bus shelter but somehow it did not crash into a nearby telephone pole or light post.

The Rockaway Times is adding a new column by Dr. Jon Sarnoff, a pediatrician.  The Healthy Child will run every other week and this week debuts on Page 30.  With this column and Ask The Doc by Peter Galvin we offer a healthy dose of healthcare information.

It’s worth repeating: The Rockaway Times is looking for a part-time do-it-aller: reporter/
writer/proofreader. Must be available on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (especially Tuesday). Must know Rockaway.  Must be comfortable with internet and social media. And must have the ability to make us laugh or at least smile occasionally without trying too hard! Send an email stating your interest to This email address is being protected from spambots. Never too early to get the camera out.  The Rockaway Times will be holding its Second Annual Photo Contest in the spring.  The NYC Parks Department will give a big assist as they will produce poster size photos of the finalists to display along the boardwalk. Just a heads up. We will need high-resolution photos otherwise the photos won’t look that great when they’re enlarged.

Sal Albanese has made if official.  He’s running for Mayor and will challenge Mayor de Blasio in the primary.  The three themes of his campaign will be corruption, incompetence and laziness.  You can make a small donation by going to Sal2017.nyc

We had a big response for people hoping to win St. John’s basketball tickets.

Rachel Fitzpatrick scored four for Sunday’s game at Madison Square Garden.

The next game available is Thursday, December 29. If you’ve already asked us to put your name in a hat for tickets no need to contact us again about future games – we’ll include you in future drawings.  If you haven’t sent us an email stating your interest please do so: This email address is being protected from spambots. Not sure what to get someone?  Gift certificates are a great option – especially at local places.  You can get Dad (or Mom) a gift certificate to try virtual golf – at the Rockaway Beach Golf Club.  It’s great fun and you can feel the great outdoors without being outdoors!  It’s on Beach 100th Street.  Of course, other great options include massage, yoga, facials – you can find many in the pages of The Rockaway Times!
