Merry Christmas. Happy Chanukah.

You know what Rockaway needs?  Something iconic.  Something everybody knows it’s Rockaway when they see it.  Something like our own Eiffel Tower (though about 940 feet shorter); something like the 34 foot high King Neptune statue in Virginia Beach.  Something like the 26 foot Unconditional Surrender statue in Sarasota, Florida.  Rockaway should have a 30 or 40 feet something.  Maybe a lifeguard chair with a male and female looking out towards the ocean. Maybe a lighthouse.

And it should be on Beach 116th and the boardwalk. (It could sit on top of the abandoned underground restrooms.)  It will be the number one photo opp for visitors.  And Queens Boro Prez Melinda Katz has $200,000 in place for it.  What do you think?

Leaving Rockaway on many mornings is a commuter nightmare on the Marine Parkway Bridge. Lane closures, and unopened toll lanes seem to tbe culprits. Sometimes traffic on Beach Channel backs up to Neponsit.  We’ve asked the MTA for an explanation.  We’ll let you know.  Meanwhile, others feel your pain.

A hot, in-demand architect has been hired to design the boutique hotel coming to Beach 108th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Morris Adjmi who was the architect of a fashionable hotel in Williamsburg, The Wythe Hotel, will be the creative boss behind the 61 room hotel (including retail).  Looks like Team Tubridy is set on making the place the place to be.  Nice.

Are you open for Christmas?  We called around asking businesses if they’d be open for Christmas (readers might want to know!).  Some answers made us laugh.  The guy who answered the phone at Kam Fung Chinese said “I don’t know.”  Another said “hold on” and never got back on the line.  And still another said, "Uhhh….maybe.”  Our story on Page 3 tries to sort it out for those of you looking to get out on Sunday, December 25.

Not that long ago we ran a column, Diary of a Fatman, by Bruce Bernfeld.   Bruce wrote about his struggles and solutions in losing 100 pounds.  He said making the effort such a public thing motivated him to keep going.  Well, you don’t have to write a column, but you could send us an email and we’ll print your New Year’s resolution in next week’s paper.  And then we’ll check back with you in a year.  Send your resolutions to This email address is being protected from spambots. Congratulations to Joe Featherston and volunteers on their anniversary. It was twenty years ago when Joe and friends launched the Rockaway Special Athletes program at St. Camillus.  It’s been an amazing ride.
