Speaking of McVeighs, we hate to tread on Sean McVeigh’s turf – he delivers Facts You Probably Don’t Need each week - but we found a couple we had to share with the New Year rolling in and with it the news of new babies arriving. Turns out, January 1 is the third least common birthday of the year. February 29, of course, comes in as the least common because it only occurs every leap year. What’s the second least common? Christmas Day, December 25th.   Although fewer babies are delivered during the holiday season, it seems the day most are started. The most common day of the year to deliver babies is September 16.

If you’ve been on the boardwalk you’ve probably noticed some of the concrete surface is blue. Well, the blue has a purpose. The word ROCKAWAY is spelled out in blue letters but it’s more obvious from the sky. Lucas McGowen sent a drone skyward to film the letters and a present fantastic glimpse of the beach from above. You can check out his handiwork on Vimeo.com. And here’s the link: vimeo.com/185047728

Kami Leigh-Agard has been writing a bi-weekly column Life With Our Artistic Child about the experiences of raising a child with autism. We’re thrilled to say that she’ll continue the column in 2017 and better yet, she’ll be joining the Rockaway Times as a reporter, too.

There’s a Dunkin Donuts on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 113th. There was a fun post online about what used to be there. Most notably it was a club called Rock A Way. People recall seeing some Hall of Fame acts there including The Ramones, Joe Cocker, and Richie Havens. The place later became Checkers, Nathans, and Wendy’s before its current incarnation.

January, 2017 brings a new administration to Washington. Locally, 2017 means a race for City Hall. Mayor de Blasio will run for re-election. He’s got two likely primary challengers in Sal Albanese and Tony Avella and we guess there might be others. On the Republican side, Eric Ulrich is eyeing a run. Paul Massey who built the successful real estate firm, Massey Knakal, is also running.

Rockaway based musician Mac Demarco paid a tribute to Prince with a rendition of It’s Gonna Be Lonely. The bay front in Arverne was the backdrop in large segments of the video.

Two buildings, long vacant, have been completely razed. The old Beach Club on Beach 116th is gone as is the old Key Food at Beach 105th and RBB. The Beach Club site will be market rate condos and the Key Food site will be a medical center.

Have a happy and safe New Year’s eve! Here’s to 2017 – it can’t be as weird as 2016!
