Happy Birthday to us. Or maybe it’s Happy Anniversary? Anyway, four years ago this week, The Rockaway Times was born. We couldn’t have done it without you. And big shout out to current columnists, Paulette Mancuso and Helen Kilgallen, Pete Mahon, and John Cori who were there at the beginning. We can’t decide if time flew or if it feels like ten years!

The 12th annual Rockstock and Barrels Surf and Music Festival is this Saturday, June 23. It’s one of the best beach events of the summer. It’s got surfing, skating, shopping, music. Fun, fun, fun. It runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Beach 90th Street.

So the developers of the condos on Beach 116th Street have decided to construct market-rate townhouse-style condos on Beach 117th Street as a complement to the high-rise building rapidly going up on 116th. Pardon the pun, but that’s a great development. Originally, the Beach 117th site was going to be affordable senior housing. Councilman Eric Ulrich was instrumental in getting the Marcal Group to go with townhouses instead suggesting they would be a better fit with the community.

Money raised at the event goes to FACES, which funds research to find a cure for epilepsy, advances new therapies, and fosters a supportive community for children, families and caregivers who live with the challenges of epilepsy.

Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato has succeeded in getting the NYS Assembly to permanently lift the tolls on the Cross Bay Bridge. The next step is getting such a vote on the NYS Senate side. Calling Joe Addabbo. Calling James Sanders. If the Senate passes the bill, it will then be up to Governor Cuomo as to whether the bill becomes law. Hurry! Cuomo has to be nice while he has an election just ahead.

Build It Back continues to tout its achievements and “progress.” Taking bows for jobs being completed or, even worse, for finishing part of a job almost six years after Sandy is a bit inappropriate. Seems to us, they should finish up quietly and hold off on the self-praise.
