HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY! No, the summer’s not over. You can’t declare the summer over since we didn’t have a spring and may not have a fall.

Volunteers Needed. The weekly volunteer cleanup and maintenance of Tribute Park has begun. Every Tuesday, weather permitting, until the fall, volunteers may stop by between 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. to help in the park. Any time you give will be helpful to maintain the park. Weeding, snipping, planting, sweeping and watering are a number of tasks for the volunteers. Wear comfortable work/gardening clothes. During the summer, if any students need community service hours, they can volunteer; their hours will be recorded, and they will be given a letter certifying their service. Check in regularly at the website for updated information or to make a donation to this beautiful memorial park: www.rockawaytributepark.org.

Speaking of water… The Community Boathouse Grand Opening is this Saturday, June 30, from 9 a.m. ‘til 5 p.m. (no reservations needed). Located on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 88th Street, the new boathouse is stocked with single and double sit-on-top kayaks as well as stand-up paddle boards, paddles and personal flotation devices. This is a volunteer effort so all support is appreciated. Bring your bathing suit, hat, footwear and sunscreen so you can get on the water!

There will be a “non-partisan” event on July 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Beach 95th Street amphitheater right off the boardwalk to show support for children and families who’ve been separated at the border in recent weeks.

The way-too-long dormant Riis Park Bathhouse will be taken over by the Riis Bazaar group and all sorts of things are planned for the iconic building before a major internal renovation takes place.  A beer garden, volleyball courts, and camping?  Yes. Camp Rockaway, which ran a pilot program in Fort Tilden last year, is already booking overnight stays in the sandy courtyard. The Rockaway Times got a tour of the building a couple of years ago. The rooftop views are spectacular and the whole building has enormous potential.

Did the bell toll on the effort to lift the toll on the Cross Bay Bridge?  When the New York State legislative session ended last week, Stacey Pheffer Amato’s accomplishment of getting the State Assembly to agree to lift the CB toll once and for all was effectively put on ice. She will have to reintroduce the legislation and that won’t be until January 2019.  She’ll have to get the Assembly on board again (and the Assembly is likely to have new members). Here’s hoping she can repeat the trick and Joe Addabbo, on the State Senate side, can move some of them to do the right thing.
