The Daily News losing...

The Daily News losing so much of its editorial staff is not good news. The News has been an invaluable watchdog and has called out, investigated, and uncovered many a government scandal. Mayor de Blasio, when told the News was in trouble a couple years back, emailed a confidante and asked, “That would be good for us, right?” In effect, he was speaking for all the hacks who prefer to work in secret with agendas that go unchecked. Without strong daily newspapers, who’s gonna watch what’s going on?

A ship and tugboats offshore were spotted dumping materials in the ocean last week.  Fortunately, it was for a good reason. Artificial reefs are being created and/or enhanced as part of a New York State initiative. Such reefs generate new habitats for marine life and create fishing and diving opportunities.

Any fans of the NBC show, The Blacklist? Fun news...they'll be filming around the stores on Beach 129th Street on Friday, July 27. We hear most of the scenes of this American crime thriller will be shot in Ciro's Bakery. This also means no parking in the area starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday night, into Friday.

Remember when Blockbuster video store came along and put a lot of mom-and-pop stores out of business? The little guys just couldn’t compete. Well, Blockbuster couldn’t compete with Netflix. The former Goliath now has one store, just one! And it’s not at the foot of Beach 116th Street, where one of the Blockbuster stores once stood. The last store is in Oregon.

One of Rockaway’s great treasures is the Rockaway Theatre Company. Don’t miss out on their latest, 9 to 5, The Musical.  The final performance dates are July 27-28 (8 p.m.) and 29 (2 p.m.); August 3, 4, (8 p.m.) and 5 (2 p.m.).  Tickets can be purchased at RockawayTheatreCompany.org

Speed cameras in school zones are scheduled to be turned off on July 25 because the State has final say as to when cameras expire. The city says speeding has declined by 63 percent in school zones where the cameras are present. Right now a bill extending the rules to 2022 is stuck in committee in Albany. We’re ok with speed cameras in school zones as long as they install signs saying there is a speed camera (which is required). A speed camera set up in secret is more moneymaker than life saver.

Don’t ask us why they do these things in the summer. The NYC Department of Design and Construction will be closing east and west bound lanes on Beach Channel Drive from Beach 116th Street to Beach 124th for a few days to conduct soil sampling.

The Rockaway Business Alliance will be hosting its first pop-up market at the Beach 108th Street Ferry Landing this Saturday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. You’ll be able to Shop Small at some of your local favorites and check out a few new businesses as well. From apparel to local baked goods and books, there is sure to be something for everyone.

It’s Sandimonium! Sunday is the annual Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest (but you know, everyone’s a winner!). The fun takes place at Beach 117th, with registration on the boardwalk starting at 11 a.m. The contest starts at noon (don’t be late) and finishes at 2 p.m. The weather is looking great, so come on out and show what you’ve got!

Hey Parks and NPS.  Why not let concessionaires run pop-up tiki bars on less crowded beaches (to draw people, to help offset losses from closed beaches)?  And why not run zip lines!  Our advice is free. You’re welcome.
