Congratulations to Don Riepe who submitted the winning photo in The 2018 Rockaway Times Photo Contest. Don’s winning photo is of swans on Jamaica Bay. The Jamaica Bay connection doesn’t end there. Don’s not only a great photographer, but a guardian of Jamaica Bay and has led environmental efforts to protect that vital body of water for years.

Plans for next year’s contest are underway. The Poseidon Parade will be a category and photos or portraits of our treasured seniors will be another. Got a great photo of grandma or grandpa? Save it (or take one now!) and then send it in next year. Photos should be taken in Rockaway (or Broad Channel or from the ferry). Meanwhile, you can send photos to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you’d like to be in our Local Color feature. Those photos are still eligible for future contests.

The Board of Standards and Appeals hearing for The Harbor Light has been adjourned. Originally scheduled for Tuesday, August 14, the next meeting is now set for Thursday, September 27. Sad to say, this will be just about a month shy of the SIXTH anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. Belle Harbor won’t be fully back until the Harbor Light is up and running.

Some television outlets gave nice coverage to local firefighter, Louis Dym, for rescuing a pregnant woman at a Brooklyn fire last Thursday. We’d like to add our salute: Great job, Louis!

NYC Ferry has added a Bronx stop as part of the ferry system. We’re all for expanding ferry service but they’ve got to get enough boats first. The current fleet is not adequately serving riders.

As we went to press, authorities finished the search for a woman that allegedly drowned at Bayswater Park on Sunday evening. The body of 35-year-old Anna Clarke was found in Jamaica Bay at around Beach 108th at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14. Our thoughts go out to her family.

The early morning weather looked like it would wipe out the Volleyball Playoffs last Saturday, but the rain held off and actually created ideal conditions. The sand was cool (we’ve had years where players suffered burns on their feet and needed medical attention) and the rest of Riis Park was empty so the league had the place to itself. Congrats to all the champs. Now, the burning question is, where will the league call home next year? Volleyball leaders have had issues with Riis.
