PSEG tells us that...

PSEG tells us that they’ll be out inspecting wooden poles for the next few weeks. Maybe it’s the Rockaway wind, but we know there are plenty of leaning towers throughout the peninsula. And here’s some utility pole trivia: PSEG maintains 350,000 such poles.

Capital One Bank on Beach 116th Street is closing, as is the one on Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway. Capital One has been turning some of their banks into banks with cafes in an effort to win over millennials. No such attempt will be made in Rockaway (maybe there are enough good coffee options here?). The property on Beach 116th Street has been a bank for decades (Greenpoint, Home Savings, and the list goes on). City records show Greenpoint Savings as the current owner, but that’s been gone since 2007.

Speaking of Beach 116th Street. On the beach block, Paper Panda has closed. Blue Bungalow has closed its store and moved online. And now Capital One. Plus Dunkin Donuts and Paninico on the next block. The condo is rising fast on that street, but the future suddenly seems murky for retail.

Just around the corner, the new apartments and four commercial units, on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, (where all the buildings burned down during Sandy), has started renting apartments. Owner Dino Tomassetti Jr. says some finishing touches such as landscaping still need to get done and he expects the 27-unit project to be fully leased by the end of the summer.

Maybe attendance would soar. We don’t think it could hurt. Why not make one Community Board meeting a party? Cut the regular business short and break out some drinks, have some music, allow members to socialize and the public to meet members in an environment that’s a little more….well, social.

Whew, there’s a lot going on this Saturday night. Bugalou Music will showcase Blac Rabbit and Gerald Bair; the popular Poseidon Prom is at the Knights and a comedy show is at the Rockaway Beach Golf Club. And not to mention, our local establishments offering great winter specials. Who says Rockaway is dead in the winter. Not this weekend!

The Super Bowl was played last Sunday. Plenty of beer, pizza, and chips were bought, but Mazzone’s Hardware reports that the big seller on the day of the big game was toilet seats. We’ll let you make your own joke here.

Facebook is now 15 years old. Way back then, you had to have a college email address to join.

Most of you know that it was started at Harvard by then-college student Mark Zuckerberg.

Our condolences go out to the friends and family of Msgr. Vincent Keane, who passed away on February 5. He was ordained in 1958 and served as the pastor of St. Francis de Sales from 1980-1988.

The Photo Contest categories are: Local Parades (Poseidon and Rockaway St. Pat’s); Humor/Fun; Rainbows/Lightning; Pets/Animals; and Beach Life (or that great Rockaway photo that you're not sure what category it fits, but it should be on display or in the running for top prize). Please, pretty please, follow the rules. (Limit number of photos, send to correct email, etc). See page 5 and 6 for the details.
