Most unfortunately, the plans for the homeless shelter at 226 Beach 101st Street continue to move forward. The Buildings Department just approved a permit to convert a manufacturing building into a “community facility.” Things seems to move quicker on this building than they have at the Harbor Light and Rockaway Medical Arts Center.

The Medical Center, on RBB and Beach 105th Street, by the way, has finally received its Temporary Certificate of Occupancy, and now just awaits Department of Health approval. It’s possible Rockaway will have a new medical facility open by the end of May.

With our Top 30 contest photos published in this week’s paper, there’ll be no Local Color this week. And thank you for continuing to submit each week. We love our locals who also help The Rockaway Times be so colorful!

Did you know the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance has planted 85,000 sprigs of beach grass along the Rockaway shoreline since 2012? The group is also hosting their annual Earth Day event on May 4 from noon to 4 p.m.  Check out rwalliance.org for more info. Most of their events begin at the old firehouse on Beach 59th Street, now called the RISE Center.

What they’re going to say on your headstone might not matter. A new study reveals that in the not-too-distant future, Facebook will have more profiles of dead people than living. You can bet people will more likely visit your Facebook page than your plot in the cemetery. So, careful what you write! Sad to think, gravestone writing will be a lost art. We always liked, “I told you I was sick.”

A brass quintet of the Queens Symphony Orchestra will perform on Monday, May 6 at the Rockaway Artists Alliance T7 Gallery at 7:30 p.m. in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the First Transatlantic Flight. It’s a free event.

Milestone reached. The Rockaway Times, the full version, is now emailed to 3,127 people (and counting) every Thursday. We know plenty of readers like to hold good old-fashioned newsprint but the future got here yesterday and there’s no stopping the trend. We have to say, the weekly email is clean and crisp and the delivery is never affected by weather. Send us an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. The Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide will be distributed starting Thursday, May 23. We’ve had some eager beavers stopping by the office for this year’s edition. We’re hustling to get it done at the same time we’re coordinating the photo contest so that the Top 30 plus 10 Honorable Mentions adorn the boardwalk before summer.
