Happy Father’s Day! We’ve got dozens of dads featured in this week’s paper and if you’re wondering how they made the paper well, we asked last week and asked online, and readers responded.

The Rockaway Medical Arts Complex on Beach 105th Street got an OK from the Department of Health and some doctors are already (quietly) seeing patients. We say quietly because the official ribbon-cutting won’t happen until sometime in the summer. We’ll have more information soon.

Hey podcast listeners! Subscribe to Zigzag, a podcast about the changing culture of business. We’re happy to say one of the co-founders, Jen Poyant, lives in Rockaway and has even written for The Rockaway Times. Jen and her ZigZag partner, Manoush Zomorodi, have taken the bold step of launching a media company, and the podcast is a great insight into the ups and downs of starting a new business.

A faithful RT reader gave us some fast food for thought. He said first-year NYC lifeguards earn $15 an hour. To get the job, you’ve got to pass a test (and probably train). No such skill is required to work at a fast food place for the same $15 an hour. Tyler Perry, who’s an actor, filmmaker, comedian and more, is also a Rockaway church supporter. After seeing a CNN report on St. John Baptist Church (7405 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) and its efforts to rebuild after Sandy, Perry donated vans to help congregants in need be able to attend services. The second Rockapulco Gold Music Festival is this Saturday, June 15, starting at 3 p.m. It’s in the parking lot at 114-04 Beach Channel (behind the Belle Rock cab (stand), just off the bay. Great local bands will play and you’ll get to sample some Rockapulco Gold beer. There’s also a Rockapulco Gold theme song which includes the chorus, “Rockapulco Gold. If you drink that sh** you’ll never get old.”

The Belle Harbor Property Owners Association holds its next meeting on Tuesday, June 18, 7 p.m. at MS/PS 114. Hank Iori, president, says there are important issues on the agenda that impact the neighborhood and asks everyone to attend.

Slow down! There are now speed cameras on Seagirt Blvd, between Beach 20th and Crest Rd. in Far Rock and on Cross Bay Blvd. between W. 6th and Noel Rd. in Broad Channel.

Pickles and Pies is taking over Surfside Bagels, located on  the Boulevard and Beach 95-96th Street. We guess that means people coming out of the bars at four in the morning will have another place to get a Philly Cheesesteak or mozzarella sticks.

One institution leaves, another takes its place. The fast food spot on Mott Avenue and Beach Channel Drive was famously a White Castle before a short run as a Checkers. Now a Taco Bell is giving that corner a try.
