The Kevin Kearney Scholarship Rockapulco 5K will be held on Saturday, July 13 at 10:30 a.m. on the boardwalk starting at Beach 116th Street. Race day registration, number pick-up and post-race activities will be at Rockaway Gliders, 114-04 Beach Channel Drive. In Kevin's name, organizers provide families in need with financial help covering some of the cost of a Catholic education. Sign up for a good cause.

And the Kevin Kearney Run is not the only time to get your feet moving. The Graybeards Family Fun Run is set for Friday evening, July 26. This fun event draws some of the biggest race crowds of the year. Stay tuned for more details.

The Warriors are coming! The Rockaway Warriors Weekend begins with a parade on Thursday, July 11, at around 6:30 p.m. in Neponsit and Belle Harbor. Come show your support for these heroes by lining Rockaway Beach Boulevard and cheering them on.

Welcome, Georgina’s. The new Italian bakery on Beach 116th, taking over the Blue Bungalow location, is having a soft opening on July 4.

The other Times, the New York Times. Ran a “36 hours in Rockaway Beach” article this week. A lot of local places got rave reviews and if you thought the ferry was crowded before, just wait ‘til the next sunny day.

We hate the idea of new laws but we wish there was some way that phone, electric, and cable companies were compelled to remove old, unused wires. Some poles and buildings have a nest of black spaghetti and it’s like hanging litter.

The Rockaway Times photo contest will soon declare a Top 10 (out of the current Top 30) and then the winners will be announced at a public gathering at Caracas on the boardwalk. We’re still working on the exact time and dates. If you haven’t gotten to the boardwalk or ferry dock for a look at these great photos, you should!

The Rockaway Little League has concluded another season and too often we neglect to salute the coaches and staff and many volunteers who make this such a Rockaway institution. So, it’s about time we say: Well done!

Bruce Hodes, who runs World Champions Karate, wants everyone to know he has moved upward. Upward as in the second floor. The long-running karate school is still at 112-20 Beach Channel Drive but is now sharing space with Elaine’s School of Dance.

School hours are not expanding but the hours of speed cameras near schools are. An expansion of speed cameras is underway and soon there will 2,000 cameras around the City. Some say it’s for safety; some say it’s a money grab. Camera hours will operate year-round, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. every weekday starting July 11.

PureWow is an online lifestyle media outlet did a nice profile of female entrepreneurs in Rockaway with the Ladies of Business Rockaway Beach getting some nice coverage. Rockaway Cottage, Off Season, Rockaway Retreat House, and the Rockaway Candle Company were some of the businesses highlighted.

Tiffany Cabán has a bigger lead over Melinda Katz in the Queens DA race after machine votes were recounted, according to the Daily News. Although absentee ballots have not yet been counted, the odds heavily favor Cabán.

St. Francis de Sales will hold 9 a.m. mass on the beach this Sunday, July 7. It’s become a tradition the last few years and attracts quite a few attendees. Weather permitting.
