We got a call...

We got a call from a reader complaining about the size of Dr. Galvin’s name in the "Ask the Doc," column. The caller said we’ve been shrinking his name and image every week and the reader has had to resort to using a magnifying glass. He asked why a couple of times.  He did not leave a name or number, so we’ll answer here. We try to keep the column to half a page. If the Doc gets uhm, wordy, we shrink the header, as it’s called. But a magnifying glass?  If the caller has trouble again this week, we suggest looking on Page 28 for Zwerling Ophthalmology.

We got another call about a swarm of bees in the Beach 90s. We understand the Bee Unit of the NYPD swarmed in to take control. There was no further buzz about it.

You probably heard about the blackout that hit Manhattan last week, odd that it was 42 years to the day since the Great Blackout of 1977. Meanwhile the Mayor was in Iowa trying to generate electricity for his presidential campaign.

We don’t know what to do with some of the suggestions we get for the paper but we do our best: A Mr. Quinn and a Mr. O’Neil asked that we tell Rockaway bars and restaurants to stock Miller Lite. Next round’s on you guys.

The Night Out Against Crime is mostly a daytime event. This year the fun is on Tuesday, August 6 from 4-8 p.m. at Beach 94th Street.

The winner of The Rockaway Times Photo Contest will be named on Saturday, August 24 at Caracas on the boardwalk. The final round of judging will take place that morning. The reception is at 11 a.m. All are welcome.

Speaking of contests, last week we said our Rockaway Sandcastle Contest would be July 28. Due to conflicts with other events and better tide times, we are hosting it on Sunday, August 4 instead. Hope to see you there!

Several senior citizens, locals, showed they’ve still got what it takes to show off in the water. They jumped in the water off Breezy and didn’t stop swimming until they reached Sandy Hook, New Jersey. They were accompanied by a couple of boats, just in case. Maybe it’s crazy, but good for them!

After many requests for more safety measures, a speed camera has been placed at Beach 73rd and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. After a woman was killed in this area last year, many are applauding the new camera.

The Sandpiper Playground at Beach 105 and the boardwalk was supposed to be completed in June. We asked Parks for an update and they told us it's now the end of August. The total construction cost is almost $6 mil. Six million bucks for a playground and it can’t be done on time?

Skies over Rockaway Beach might be more colorful than usual this Saturday. Geoff Rawling and friends are hosting the Rockaway Kite Festival at Beach 84th Street and the boardwalk. And you can expect an appearance by the mobile Whalemina. The fun runs all day from 10 a.m. to dark.
