Get your pails and shovels ready! The 4th annual Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest is this Sunday, August 4 on Beach 117th Street. Registration begins on the boardwalk at 11 a.m. The contest begins at 12 noon. Don’t be late, as you only have until 2 p.m. to finish! All ages and levels welcome. Start talking it up with your sea-loving friends and neighbors. The Poseidon Parade will be in September and it’s never too early to get your pirate hat or mermaid fins or dolphin shoes or whatever floats your boat. Make plans to march in one of Rockaway’s best events of the year.

Happy birthday to Rockaway salesman par excellence, Fred Marino. The one and only Freddy turns 80 on Friday, which means it’s only 10 years until retirement. He’s been with The Rockaway Times since Day One and he’s probably knocked on your door looking for you to buy an ad. Here’s to you, Fred!  Happy 80th!

Sad news came in recent days when we learned Annie McMahon died.  Annie was a summer resident of Breezy Point. She was born with Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that impacts the lungs and digestive system. Diagnosed at age three, her family began an annual “Take the Plunge for Cystic Fibrosis” to raise funds and awareness about this deadly disease. Annie was an inspiration to many and leaves a quite a legacy. She was just 22.

Melinda Katz has been declared the winner of the Queens District Attorney democratic primary edging out Tiffany Caban by a mere 60 votes. The New York City Board of Elections declared Katz the winner on Monday though it might not be the last we hear as Caban will challenge the decision in court. Assuming Katz is running in November, she will be a heavy favorite against any Republican or other party candidate.

A Lime Bike seemed to explode into flames last week and the video made quite the rounds on social media and on news sites. A Lime spokesperson claimed that someone tried to break the lock with a sharp object, penetrating the battery, causing it to ignite.

Sean Keller, who spearheads the Steve Belson Memorial swim, reminded us that this year’s event on Saturday, August 3 consists of various swimming events and includes a brief remembrance of Steve at 10 a.m. at Beach 92nd  and the Boardwalk, followed by a non-competetive half-mile swim.

The Rockaway Rotary Food Drive is this Saturday, August 3 from 8 a.m.-12 noon at Deidre Maeve's in Breezy. Food will be distributed to three local pantries. The food drive is important because school programs for lunch will be ending soon and some families depend on the pantries until the school year begins.

St. John’s Hospital is running a Back-to-School Wellness Fair featuring health screenings, health education, and fun activities. Typically, more than 700 community members attend this event yearly. One thousand backpacks filled with school supplies will be given to children in attendance. It’s tomorrow, Friday, August 2 starting at noon.

It’ll be held on Brookhaven Avenue, between Beach 19th Street and Beach 20th Street (in front of St. John’s).

A 67-year-old construction worker, Jose Martins of New Jersey, was killed on Tuesday when a wall collapsed at a building under construction at Beach 67th Street at The Tides at Arverne By The Sea. The cause is under investigation.
