The roads in Rockaway are horrible...

The roads in Rockaway are horrible. The new DOT signage (right turn only, bikes, and bus only designations, for instance) do a great job confusing drivers and making traffic worse. And then there’s the construction and ripping up streets. We got a suggestion from a reader that they should do this work between midnight and 5 a.m.  We got a complaint from another reader decrying the fact that work is being done at night. We give up!

We’re getting more submissions than ever for our Local Color page. We love the engagement! We’re doing the best we can to include photos from everyone (new folks get a slight edge over those who submit every week, but we do love regulars!)

We might. Might. Maybe. We might soon have a Local Poets Corner for those who like to rhyme (or not). You might be a poet and not even know it. You might write a poem whenever you get home. We don’t want to get you primed though, yes, those sentences rhymed. We’re just saying maybe, baby. Stay tuned.

Three years ago, we did a story on local resident, Frank Farrell, who had been waiting many years for a kidney transplant. Frank recently stopped by the RT office to let us know that his miracle finally came. He received a transplant in February and says he’s feeling great. Here’s a friendly reminder to consider being an organ donor…it can save a life!

Best of luck to Batesy’s, a new barbecue place that has just opened at Arverne By The Sea. The folks behind Pico are doing BBQ at the new spot and if it’s nearly as good as the 129th Street spot, it’s going to be a hit. Their opening was delayed because National Grid has refused new gas accounts over the rejection of an additional gas pipeline.  Batesy’s went electric and we bet the business will be as well!

Beach block cars in Belle Harbor continue to get broken into (and at least two stolen). Lock your cars and report criminal activity to the 100th Precinct. They need to see the stats!

The City announced on Tuesday that it will no longer issue violations for sidewalks damaged by trees. Tree roots have been known to lift up or crack sidewalks and owners used to have to foot the bill, but no longer. The City will be responsible for fixing them. Why do we get the feeling homeowners will now be alerting the City to fix sidewalks? There’s already a backlog of some 50,000 violations the City has to review.

We’re in the middle of Palindrome week. You know what a palindrome is, right?  It’s a word, phrase, or sequence that reads the same backward as forward. Well, this week it’s the calendar.  Today is 9-12-19. Tomorrow, Friday is 9-13-19. Frontwards, backwards, same day, same thing through 9-19-19.

Allow us to state the obvious: Septembers in Rockaway are pretty great.
