Longtime principal of Scholars’ Academy, Brian O’Connell, surprised lots of people with his announcement last week that he’d be leaving the school to take over the headmaster position at Lawrence Woodmere Academy. Before O’Connell took over the school, parents clamored for a good middle school option in Rockaway. Many Rockaway kids headed to Mark Twain, Boody and other schools in Brooklyn. Scholars’ quickly became a great option for parents and students and then became an even bigger deal when it became a top-flight high school as well. Much of the fabulous success is due to O’Connell. He’ll be missed and Rockaway’s loss is certainly Lawrence Woodmere’s gain. We wish him great success and salute him for a job well done.

Happy 100th to Rogers. The bar, soon to have its hotel reborn, will celebrate on Saturday, December 21. Owner Mike McMahon has done a great job since taking over from Richie Rogers who resisted turning the rooms into city shelters though was offered big money to do so.

Just 100 feet or so from Rogers is the Hot Yoga studio run by Anita Ruderman and another anniversary is worth a mention as Anita celebrates her 10th year at the 116th Street location. We know she’s been getting people to sweat a lot longer than that, but she deserves a big round of applause for being a 116th mainstay and a bigger round of applause is due because she’s donating proceeds from her anniversary class to the Graybeards. Go Anita!

The Graybeards are holding their annual dinner dance on Saturday, January 25 at El Caribe in Brooklyn. You don’t have to be a member to go to this always-fun event. And if you can’t make it, buy a pot o’ gold ticket. You might win some big bucks and you’ll certainly be helping one of the great, great organizations in Rockaway.

We hope the Parks Department isn’t looking for Mobi mats next summer. The mats, which allow the disabled and elderly to get to the shoreline, have been left on the beach. They’re likely to wash away or be buried.

Several businesses in the Sands Point building at Beach 102nd Street and RBB have been hurt by rumors that the new owners will want them out. We’ve been told that businesses have actually been offered lease extensions through 2026.

Got $34 million? If you do, you might be interested in this “rare opportunity.”  A Best Western Hotel and a Wingate by Wyndham Hotel, side-by-side properties on Beach 21st Street in Far Rockaway, are being sold together for $33,900,000.
