Happy New Year! Yes, it seems like we’re jumping the gun but our next issue comes out on January 2, 2020. So, holy smokes, it’s going to be 2020. Year of the Hindsight? And before we forget, we demand that DOT make a resolution to fix Rockaway roads in the new year!

This is our last advertiser and contributor alert for 2019. We close the paper on MONDAY, December 30, so get everything in as soon as possible. If you want to advertise the first week of January, please notify us by Friday, December 27 and get the ad to us by Monday at noon. The office will be closed New Year’s Eve Day and New Year’s Day.

And Happy Nuptials to Tom McVeigh and Jill Brady who are tying the knot on New Year’s Eve. The bride and groom come from large Rockaway families and we expect it to be epic.

If you’re counting (we are) the Assistant to the Secretary of the Army, Rickey “R.D.” James was supposed to approve (or not) the Coastal Storm Risk Reduction Project within 120 days of receiving the report. The report details how 19 new or reconstructed jetties will go a long way in giving the peninsula the protection it needs from future storms. Mr. James has had the report since August 22, 2019. We’ve passed the 120-day mark and have heard nothing, and the local Army Corps rep and Senator Schumer seem to be in the dark as well.

Not the kind of holiday news we like to report: A man was shot and killed last Wednesday on Beach 88th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard around 6:15 p.m.  As we went to press, police were still looking for the gunman.

Base pay range is $14.90 to $25.67/per hour; Sunday pay range is $18.63 to $32.09/per hour; overtime range is $22.35 to $38.51/per hour (according to current pay rates). For more information about test sites and dates: go to nps.gov/gate/getinvolved/workwithus.htm

So, Rogers celebrated its centennial on Saturday, December 21. And celebrated in grand style, we might add. We think, it might be the third longest running business in Rockaway. Kennedy’s in Breezy Point came by barge in 1910 and The Wave started in 1893. The Belle Harbor Yacht Club started in 1904, but that was and is a private concern. If there are others, our readers will be sure to tell us!

Happy Birthday, Pat McVeigh!

Phil Goldfeder, remember him? The former New York State Assemblyman now works for a New Jersey bank and is, sadly, mostly off the radar. Well, look no further than Page 23 to see a letter he’s co-authored with current Assemblywoman Stacey Amato. The duo have teamed up to express their dismay with the Queens Chamber of Commerce which supports a park instead of a railway along the abandoned tracks in Queens.

We got late news that Mike McDonnell died on Monday. You might remember that he and Dylan Smith were among the heroes who helped save others on the night of Hurricane Sandy. We’ll have more in next week’s paper. Rest in peace, Mike.
