Want to vent about commuting issues (there are lots of you! With lots of issues)? Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato will be hosting a Commuters Town Hall with MTA New York City Transit President Andy Byford at the YMCA on Thursday, February 6 at 7 p.m.

Pizza, pizza. RT reporter, Kami-Leigh Agard, had the idea of celebrating pizza week (or month) in Rockaway and we thought the idea was downright tasty. Rockaway pizza choices are better and more diverse than ever, and you no longer have to leave the peninsula! Check out her story on pages 12 and 13.

Dick Roberts, lifelong friend to many in Belle Harbor, died suddenly, early Monday, January 6.

A funeral is planned for Friday, January 10 at St. Francis de Sales at 11 a.m. After years in the insurance business, most recently, he’d been pitching in, helping with things at the Harbor Light.

Our condolences also go out to Arverne By the Sea resident, Glenn DiResto, on the loss of his mother, Moya McHale, who died on January 7. A Mass is being held at SFDS at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, January 9.

As a reminder, services for Mike McDonnell will be Monday, January 13 at St. Francis, 11 a.m.

Mother Nature's  events seem to come so often, it’s easy to miss them in the news. Puerto Rico was hit with a series of earthquakes this week. Many Rockaway residents head there for the winter, so we had immediate concern. John Sica, who has written for us in the past, was there and sent us an update via text message (electricity was out but he still found cell service).  See Page 35  for his startling and sometimes humorous account.

Beach Channel Drive and Beach 116th Street is WORSE since road crews “repaved” about 10 days ago. We said it last week and we’ll say it again: it’s a scandal! The Department of Design and Construction, the agency allegedly in charge of repairs on this job, should be (should be!) embarrassed and investigate the shoddy work. There are deep potholes and loose gravel which can cause car skidding. It’s outrageous. Councilman Ulrich, we await your reaction.

Speaking of City Council members, Donovan Richards, is looking more and more like the next Queens Borough President. He got the backing of the Queens Dem party machine and has announced a couple of big unions support his bid as well. Everyone who runs for office talks a good game when it comes to Rockaway, but Richards has actually represented people here. The redevelopment of Far Rockaway is happening under his watch. The special election is March 24.

We got a report of a fire at 150 Beach 110th  on Wednesday (you might have heard if you get Citizen Alerts) but it was quickly extinguished.

The theater on Beach 116th Street has now been completely razed. The skyline (for now) is open blue sky and it’s a strange sight, not seeing the hulking, crumbling theater hanging over the street. Take a walk or ride past before the planned condos go up.

Tickets for the Graybeard Dinner Dance are on sale. This fun night supports one of Rockaway’s great nonprofits. The big night is Saturday, January 25 at El Caribe in Mill  Basin. Bill Dunn is being honored this year as is the Richie Allen Foundation. Call the office for tickets (or if you just want to make a donation). Reservations are necessary, so make the call: 718-634-6812.
