President Trump tweeted the following: “A massive 200 Billion Dollar Sea Wall, built around New York to protect it from rare storms, is costly, foolish, & environmentally unfriendly idea that, when needed, probably won’t work anyway. It will also look terrible. Sorry, you’ll just have to get your mops and buckets ready!” Not that such a wall is part of the Rockaway reformulation project, but we checked with the Army Corps to make sure there wasn’t going to be any White House resistance to jetties, etc.  “Nope…all should be ok,” is what we were told.

Sometimes a horrific event serves as a reminder. The house fire on Beach 132nd  and Cronston Avenue early Saturday morning reminds us to check smoke alarms and change batteries. Please do so. We’re thankful the family got out of the house in time and neighbors were quick to call the Fire Department and 911.

Good work by the Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters group for getting a judge to order a Temporary Restraining Order against the proposed homeless shelter on Beach 101st Street. All work must stop until another hearing occurs on January 27.  We’re not sure what to make of this but we’ll take any stop to this ill-advised shelter.

Kevin Boyle and his bike riding sidekick, Rick Horan, have completed their bike ride from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina to Clearwater, Florida, a trek of almost 600 miles. This week’s Boyleing Points has some highlights and Kevin’s been posting daily updates on YouTube. You can go to “Rockaway Times” on YouTube and find all the clips. And please hit the subscribe button! Oh, and don’t worry, they’re driving back.

The Rockaway Beach Hotel, looking to open by summer 2020, made news in Real Estate Weekly for securing a construction loan to finish the job. The place on Beach 108th and the  Boulevard will have an outdoor pool, event space, restaurant and stores. The article neglected to say what we know: it’s going to be awesome!

We have newspaper delivery challenges all the time. Of course, we’re happy we can get The Rockaway Times delivered to you in the first place, but we often get calls and emails about missed deliveries or too few papers (hello, Breezy Point). It’s frustrating for all of us! The company we use delivers circulars and other publications in the metro area. So, that explains a mix-up last week and it was a beaut. Apparently, they mixed up some bags and didn’t realize they were delivering Gay City News instead of The Rockaway Times to some households.  Sometimes, you just have to laugh.

Lime Bikes are leaving Rockaway, first reported in The Wave. And the company is leaving a bunch of other cities. The green bikes that were much loved and somewhat loathed won’t be available as the company announced that it is focusing on e-scooters (in other markets). Boston, Seattle, Charlotte and San Diego are just a few of the places Lime is leaving. We’ll see if another dockless bike-sharing company will take its place.
