Andy, we hardly knew ye. On January 9, we told you MTA Boss Andy Byford was planning a town hall at the Rockaway YMCA in February. Like many trains, he isn’t coming. Byford resigned on January 23 after reportedly clashing with Governor Cuomo on the future direction of the MTA. He, generally, got very good reviews for the work he did the past couple of years.

According to a report in the Queens Daily Eagle, the only daily print newspaper in Queens, a Far Rockaway pharmacist has been indicted on 12 counts charging him with illegally distributing oxycodone and filing false tax returns between March 2011 and June 2014. Daniel Russo, the owner of Russo’s Pharmacy on Cornaga Avenue, allegedly conspired to fill fraudulent prescriptions.

Wanna be a lifeguard? Now is the time to apply for summer surf lifeguard jobs at Gateway National Recreation Area at Riis Park Beach. Five levels of surf lifeguard positions have been posted to www.usajobs.gov. Depending on experience, applicants could apply for jobs ranging from beginner and lead lifeguard (recreation aid GS3, GS4; lead recreation aid GS 5) to supervisory lifeguard (supervisory recreation assistant GS6, GS7). To apply, go to www.usajobs.gov. Under “keywords,” type in National Park Service. Under “location,” type in New York. All applicants must pass a surf-lifeguard test. Applicants can call 1-800-678-7946 for testing dates and locations in the New York area.

After last week’s Temporary Restraining Order which put the brakes on the planned homeless shelter on Beach 101st Street, an oral argument occurred in court this past Monday. According to Attorney Mike Scala, the court ruled that the temporary restraining order would be extended until a decision was reached on the preliminary junction. The judge signaled he knew how important this case was and sought to have that decision within the next few weeks. Scala said, “In the meantime, the facility should stay locked up and individuals should not be entering it.”

The Super Bowl isn’t the only thing happening on Sunday. The first ever, first annual, Polar Plunge sponsored by the Rockaway Business Alliance takes place at 11 a.m. at Beach 67th Street. The splash will help raise money for the Arverne by the Bay Community Center. A post-dive party will take place at the Rockaway Brewing Company.
