The Prom is on. This Saturday, February 8, the Mermaid Brigade holds one of the most fun nights of the winter season—Poseidon’s Prom. There’s some nautical fun to be had at the Knights of Columbus on Beach 90th Street starting at 7:30 p.m. The $40 ticket helps defray costs of the late summer parade and gets you drinks, lite food fare, music, raffles, art, and a break from the winter doldrums. Tickets can be purchased at Poseidonsparade.com. The Rockaway Times is the official sponsor of the Parade.

And speaking of sponsorships, it’s time for The 2020 Rockaway Times Photo Contest! And wow, time really flies. This great tradition continues with the help of the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) and NYC Parks (and RT staff and John Cori). Please check out Page 2 for details. We publish photos every week in Local Color and are proud to sponsor this contest (because Rockaway’s Got Talent!). You can still submit photos for Local Color!

Next week is Valentine’s Day. Nice time to make dinner reservations or get the spa gift certificate. Check out our advertisers for ideas. Can’t say you weren’t warned!

Ugh. Baxter’s Hotel and the Brisas del Mar restaurant on Beach 116th were ordered to vacate the premises immediately after a Department of Buildings inspector found “the sewer system discharging into garbage cans and plastic containers” and not the city sewer line. The situation “presents an imminent danger to occupants” and “public safety.” Owner John Baxter claims a  neighbor on Beach 115th Street caused the sewer line damage and he is suing. He also said 17 occupants have refused the order and continue to reside there. Baxter said he is unsure which agency enforces evictions in these cases and can’t get an answer from Buildings.

Just down a few storefronts on Beach 116th Street, a number of buildings are for sale. The various lots with Rockaway Food Mart, JKS Printing, Job Lot, Kings Pharmacy, and Sweet 116 are being sold together with an asking price of $5,250,000. This sale is for the property, not the businesses.

Mystery solved, mostly. We now know WildBlue Press will publish Tom O’Callaghan’s latest thriller, No One Will Hear Your Screams. When we get a clue, we’ll give you the publication date. Congrats to Tom, who’s already had a couple of books published (The Bone Thief and The Screaming Room).

Also on the calendar is Bugalou’s Music Series. Friday, February 28 at St. Camillus, the popular The The Band Band (that’s not a typo!) will be back after a successful show last season. We’ll have more details in the next few issues.

The 100th Precinct tweeted this out: Did you know? In 2020, 44% of cars stolen in NYC were running or had the keys left in the vehicle. Hmmmm…wonder if that percent is higher in Rockaway?

Boardwalk Concessions and bids update from Parks: “We are excited about the interest in this site from both potential operators and the public. Currently, we are reviewing responses to the RFP. A new agreement would take effect in the summer of 2021. This summer will be business as usual with the Rockaway Beach Club as we prepare the contract for the new concession term. The Rockaways are a jewel of the NYC Parks system and we are committed to offering outstanding service to the Rockaway community and beach-goers from all over NYC.”
