So, you can go to Target but you can’t go in Lana’s Loft or The Gift is Love? That’s just nuts. But, maybe if they sold nuts, then they could open?

We usually publish our annual Rockaway Summer & Community Guide this week but that’s another thing on hold. When we do finally publish it, we’re thinking on calling it The Unusual Summer Guide or The What-The-Hell Summer Something. We’re hoping to have something for you by the end of June.

Gift the gift of gifting. For every $50 gift card that Batesy’s BBQ sells, they will donate one meal to St. John’s Hospital staff, and for every $100 gift card, they will donate three meals. Show your support for this great barbecue joint as they show support for heroes.

The second highest coronavirus death rate in the entire city was in 11691, the neighborhoods of Edgemere, Bayswater, and Far Rockaway. Arverne in 11692 and Belle Harbor and Rockaway Park in 11694 were also among the hardest hit zip codes. These stats are available on the City’s Department of Health website. Income disparity, location of nursing homes, and age were factors. The numbers, of course, are not final and do include “probable deaths.” Just across the bay is Starrett City, which had the highest death rate by a considerable margin.

The boardwalk concessions were given a green light to open this Friday. Kinda, sorta. The green is full of yellow and red. In addition to the short notice, managers have to figure out how to operate. Are employees supposed to enforce social distancing? Or will police do that? If they serve alcohol, are people required to stay within the immediate concession area? That would be like, uhm, a bar. And bars not allowed to open. Yet if patrons get a drink and leave the immediate area they’ll be on the boardwalk with alcohol, which is a no-no.

Each of the Top 30 and five Honorable Mention photos from The Rockaway Times Photo Contest will be blown up to poster-size and be placed on the boardwalk railing or ferry dock for public review and enjoyment on Friday, May 29 or shortly thereafter. We’ve been posting one a day on Instagram and the reviews and comment reinforce what we thought: it’s the best contest yet! You can also see all the photos online at www.RockawayTimesTV.com.
