Brian O’Connell, former principal at Scholars’ Academy, conducted graduation ceremonies at his new school, Lawrence Woodmere Academy, and included a drive-in movie with a huge screen to display and livestream the whole event. O’Connell was just a couple of weeks in his new position as Headmaster at LWA when Covid-19 restrictions became necessary. A YouTube video was made of the event and you can catch it on our website RockawayTimesTV.com.

The same Brian O’Connell is also taking DOT and City work crews to task for leaving streets and sidewalks a mess and for creating hazardous areas. We feel his pain (though our frustration is with PSEG which left a construction bin full of concrete for weeks in front of our building. After multiple complaints, they came to remove it – but left a huge (huge!) city-owned flower pot in the middle of the sidewalk.)

2021 is a lifetime away in politics but we’re going out on a limb here and saying we believe Bill de Blasio’s wife, Chirlane McKray, will not be the next mayor.

The East Coast Black Surfing Association organized a paddle out in memory of George Floyd last Saturday. It was a stunning site to see so many people take to the water.

A 75-year-old man who was pushed to the ground by Buffalo NY police and then hospitalized is now part of a conspiracy. The President tweeted that he might be a far left-wing “Antifa provocateur.” We’re thinking AARP more than Antifa. The man is part of Western New York Peace Center and the Catholic Work Movement.

Long Island received the green light to enter Phase 2 of New York’s re-opening plan. The City is expected to move to Phase 2 on Monday, June 22.  Restaurants will be able to provide outdoor dining. And businesses like hair salons, in-store retail, and some offices will be able to reopen. The June 22 date is not definite because if Covid-19 numbers spike, the Mayor can push back the date.

Both houses of the New York State Legislature have passed a bill to repeal New York Civil Rights Law section 50-A, which has shielded police disciplinary records from the public. It requires law enforcement agencies to turn over the disciplinary records of police officers when they are requested under the state's Freedom of Information Law. The bill passed along party lines in the Senate, 40-22. The Assembly approved the measure 101-43 Tuesday evening, also along party lines. Governor Cuomo has said he will sign the bill into law. On Monday, the Rockaway Youth Task Force had held a teach-in about the law in front of Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato’s office.
