Happy 4th of July.

*****

Heads up. Parking restrictions are in effect starting Friday this week (12:01 tonight) as the official 4th of July holiday is recognized a day early.

*****

The annual Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide is now out and will be available at many stores and other locations, including our orange news boxes. If you don’t get one right away, we will be restocking throughout July. Please remember to tell our advertisers you saw their ad.

Brooklyn Assemblyman Robert Carroll introduced legislation to curb open container laws while pandemic restrictions are in place. This would allow people to have an adult beverages on boardwalks, beaches, parks, wherever. To-go drinks could be drunk. (We checked; that’s grammatically correct. We think or thunk).

The Rockaway Times got another mention by Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports. Last year, he appeared in a photo with Rockaway Times local legend Suntan Dan Edwards in Saratoga. We noted how Suntan, in his Rockaway Times t-shirt, had dominated the photo and Portnoy tweeted that had we put him “in a body bag.” We sent Portnoy a t-shirt so he wouldn’t be so overmatched the next time. Well, earlier this week he snidely mentioned The Rockaway Times and the t-shirt on Instagram. He was wearing a paisley outfit and boasted about all the local women he had conquered, so to speak. Well, it might have worked in Rockaway NEW JERSEY, where he actually was. This guy really should come to the real Rockaway and go to Whit’s for a pizza review. That could be an epic meetup.

We have to our update emergency preparedness notices. In addition to being ready for hurricanes (flashlights, batteries, water, non-perishables, first aid kit) you might add PPEs (personal protective equipment; masks) to your list. If the virus spikes in coming weeks or months, you might think about getting toilet paper and other essentials now, before shortages occur again.

A thresher shark, at least seven feet in length, washed up on the beach around Beach 102nd Street on Monday. Some speculated that it was wounded when caught up in a nearby jetty. Of course, lots of the many thousands who saw our photos online seemed shocked that such wildlife would be in ocean waters. The timing was noteworthy as swimming was to be allowed in just two days.

Lifeguards at Riis Park are back on duty, as of this past Wednesday. The parking lot is still restricted to 50 percent capacity. Riis Bazaar will have limited food and beverage (including alcohol) services operating as Phase 2 gets underway.

Many local places are offering outdoor dining now and some are expanding and converting parking spaces on the street in front of their shops, which is permissible (as long as the spots are not near a fire hydrant) under Phase 2. As of now, these street spots are good through September 8, 2020.

There’s sad news to report. Ernie Kiburis, a Department of Sanitation worker at Rockaway's Q14 garage and known to many locals, died in a car crash at Beach 108th/Rockaway Freeway on Monday afternoon. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.

Sign of the times: mask improvising. Especially during the beach season. We’ve seen shirts. Bathing suit tops. Bathing suit bottoms. That’s not to say the people were otherwise undressed.

Heads up, eyes open. Tires and rims were removed from a couple of vehicles parked in the Beach 80s near Shore Front Parkway. Honda vehicles seem to be a particular target. Wheel locks are recommended as a deterrent from theft.
