Happy Birthday, Toots! Vincentia D'Amato Becker, better known as Toots, celebrated her 100th birthday on the beach, Tuesday, with family and friends. And a very Happy 90th Birthday to Gloria McDonald who celebrated with neighbors on Beach 134th Street.

The Tenant Safe Harbor Act — which gives tenants protection from eviction if they haven’t been able to pay rent because of the coronavirus pandemic – has been extended through October 1. This protection does not apply to the roughly 14,000 people who were issued eviction warrants prior to the pandemic.

Former Queens Borough President Claire Shulman died Sunday. She held the position after Donald Manes resigned amidst a big corruption scandal in the mid-1980s. She was followed by Helen Marshall who was followed by Melinda Katz who was followed by Sharon Lee. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the Restore Mother Nature Bond Act will be postponed until 2021 due to New York’s financial instability.  If passed by voters, it would have provided funding for flood-mitigation work, efforts to restore fish and wildlife habitats.

Speaking of Cuomo, he’s going to have a book published regarding Covid-19 and his management of the crisis. Hmm, we thought the crisis was ongoing. Seems like an odd time to declare victory. We wonder if this will be a literal rewrite of history. Is he going to quote himself: “This is an enemy that we have underestimated from Day 1. And we have paid the price dearly.”

Hoop stuff: The St. Francis Summer Classic (technically it might be called “Classics” but we’re going with the singular) is in playoff mode and even with restrictions, it’s been great. If you go to check the action, remember, spectators are asked to wear masks. The 3 on 3 By The Sea – Claire Droesch tournament is Friday, August 28. If you’re looking to play, you must register by August 26. See Page 22 for details. And Rockaway Hoops, the interview show hosted by Ryan Woerner and Coach Charlie Marquadt airs on Facebook every Sunday, usually around 8 p.m. The show has a big following just a few weeks after launching. Check it out.

We wanted to say “best wishes” to gyms and yoga studios and other workout places which were given the green light by the Governor to open Monday, August 24th but the Mayor seems to have thrown a wrench into that saying, not so fast. He says September 2. What’s more tiring than a hard gym workout? The ongoing clashes between the mayor and governor.

The digital news platform, The City, reports that New York City’s First Lady, Chirlaine McCray, has a staff of 14 people “as de Blasio is talking about laying off up to 22,000 workers amid a pandemic-induced budget crisis.” McCray is “thinking about” running for Brooklyn Borough President.
