With the news that the MTA is desperate for a federal bailout and New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli saying “unheard of” service cuts will happen, more people will be forced to drive cars. As it is, plenty of people are opting for cars even before service cuts because mass transit is an unappealing option in the age of Covid. Used cars are fetching higher prices than ever. Some are calling the additional wheels on the road, Carmegeddon.

But fear not. Because we’re all about trying to stay hip (ha) and make you hip (ha) we have to introduce you to the word micromobility and how that trend might stave off Carmegeddon.  Micromobility devices include bicycles, e-bikes, electric scooters, and electric skateboards. The City Council just passed a bill allowing e-scooters on the streets and another bill instructed the Department of Transportation to develop a shared e-scooter program like Citibike. We wonder if Lime scooters will sprout in Rockaway. And we hope lycra-wearing scooterists never become a thing.

SBA began approving PPP forgiveness applications and remitting forgiveness payments on October 2, 2020. If you run a small business and received a PPP loan, keep an eye on various deadlines. Check SBA.gov for an (allegedly) simplified form to apply for forgiveness.

Rockaway is part of Queens but Rockaway is just Rockaway in a lot of ways, its own separate place. Like in real estate. According to a report by Douglas Elliman, the real estate firm, Queens home sales “fell sharply year over year for the second straight quarter.” Anybody buying in Rockaway might say, “no way” and they’d be right. While greater Queens had declines, Rockaway saw a 17% jump in prices and a 36% jump in closings from the previous quarter.

Fresh ocean air and less density makes Rockaway the place to be. And with more people working from home, the hellish commute to the City might be less of a factor for some.

Congratulations to Shantell Martin, Friends of Seaside Playground, and The Rockaway Hotel for making a huge mural possible in the playground of the Waterside School at Beach 109th Street. It was a big blank slate of blacktop until Martin transformed the place with her magical line-painting mural skills.

Oz Pearlman was the winner of the Rockapulco Run marathon held this past Sunday. Does that name ring a bell? Pearlman is a mentalist/ magician who placed third on America’s Got Talent a few years back.
