A heartfelt Veterans Day salute of thanks to the many people who’ve served to protect the freedoms of our great nation. November 11 marked the day we remember those who served. And November 12 is the day we remember those who lost their lives when Flight 587 crashed into Belle Harbor in 2001.

Who knows, he might’ve been busy writing a book, but Governor Cuomo should’ve found time to fix the Board of Elections and the election process. He’s been governor for ten years.

City Councilman Donovan Richards will be the next Queens Borough President come January, which means a special election will be held for his council seat. One candidate who just declared is Shaun Rux, former principal at MS 53, the Brian Piccolo school in Far Rockaway. Rux got national recognition in 2012 for helping turn around the school from an F to a C and achieving 90% attendance among students. One of his tactics was creating “Rux Bux,” a school currency which was awarded to kids for good behavior and showing up on time. Rux Bux could be used for school supplies or special lunches. He made a difference. Now he’s looking to do the same at the city level.

The Graybeards and RIBS are sponsoring a food drive and will be picking up food supplies to restock food pantries throughout the peninsula on Saturday, November 14 from Beach 117th to Beach 149th.  If you’ve gotten a blue bag, please fill it and leave it out before 9 a.m. If your donation does not get picked up, you can drop it off at St. Francis de Sales. In this year of Covid and high unemployment, this food drive is critically important.

Groin update: The Army Corps says by March “we will have completed the groin work near Beach 32nd and Beach 36th streets. We cannot work in this area after March until September because of the endangered species restrictions. That is why, by February, will be starting the groin work near Beach 149th and Beach 145th.  This work will continue, along with groin work near Beach 140th and Beach 135th, until the fall of 2021, and then the work will shift to complete the groins near Beach 92nd and Beach 98th.  Because of the seasonal requirements, the schedule is pretty complex.”
