We went to press just as the weather was getting weathery. The forecast called for up to 12 inches which makes complete sense. You couldn’t have 2020 without a blizzard. We write this with fingers crossed that it’s “just” a blizzard and won’t be long remembered. Stay safe!

Speaking of 2020, The New York Post reports that UFO sightings have jumped 31 percent in New York City from 2019. One sighting was an orange, metallic orb over Jamaica Bay. This is not to be confused the Unidentified Floating Object, Geoff Rawling’s Dragon Boat.

A good way to save on a sign. Paul Monahan is the new owner of Paul’s Bicycle Shop on Beach 116th Street. The full name of the shop is now Paul’s Bicycle Shop RBNY. Looking to treat yourself or somebody in the family to a new bike for Christmas? Here’s a great option. We wish the new Paul best of luck. Anyone who starts a business in a pandemic gets a big thumbs up from us.

Good news indeed that St. John’s has received the COVID-19 vaccine and is beginning to vaccinate frontline health care heroes. St. John’s had one of the first patients diagnosed with Covid-19 and Rockaway was one of the hardest-hit communities during the peak of the virus in March and April. The vaccine arrived Monday and by late Tuesday morning more than 175 front line workers had gotten a shot.

And speaking of vaccines, a New York nurse was the first person to receive the vaccine in the country. Dr. Michelle Chester, who delivered the first injection at Northwell is a Far Rockaway High School grad.

There will be a Special Election for District 31 on February 23, 2021 to fill the City Council seat vacated by Donovan Richards who is now the Queens Borough President. The filing deadline for this election was yesterday, December 16, 2020. Candidates often file at the last moment so we don’t have the final list yet but those last minute filers sure had a challenge with the weather. We saw one list that had four candidates including Manny Silva, Selvena Brooks-Powers, Pesach Osina, Shawn Rux and Bradley Berfas.
