Covid numbers going up on the Peninsula. Robby Schwach of Councilman Ulrich’s office sends out weekly reports and this week is worth noting. Since Thanksgiving, there have been 937 new cases in Rockaway including 243 in 11694 (Rockaway Park/Belle Harbor/Neponsit) alone, and 152 in Breezy Point. Far Rockaway has 374 new cases since Thanksgiving but with a much bigger population than 11694 or 11697.

The good news is parts of Rockaway are some of the first in line for the vaccine rollout in NYC. On Tuesday, Mayor de Blasio announced the 27 zip codes "hardest hit by the coronavirus" that will receive the vaccine when the general public is next up. Three of those are Rockaway zip codes including 11691, 11693 and 11694. How these neighborhoods were determined is not clear.

According to Move.org, New York had the #9 highest amount of people moving into the state. But wait, New York also had the #2 most amount of residents moving out of state. There are a lot of snowbirds in Rockaway who move only temporarily. Overall, Rockaway is a place that people are definitely moving to.

If you’re reading this on Christmas eve, there’s still time to get gift cards at local businesses. Rockaway Hoops, the terrific show hosted by Charlie Marquadt and Ryan Woerner, have teamed with a few places (Kennedy’s, Callies, Bungalow, Harbor Light and Jamesons) to promote gift cards. If you mention “Rockaway Hoops” when picking up the gift card, you’ll get a free drink to go.

Rick Horan says it’s time to get the hottest ticket in town while sharing some love this Holiday season. Instead of the usual bottle of wine, consider giving a Graybeard's 50-50 Pot-A-Gold ticket to that special someone. Last year's winning ticket was worth over $50,000! The Graybeards, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, was formed in 2001 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the crash of AA 587. The mission was simple, help local people in need. Please consider purchasing one or more tickets as it’s The Graybeards’ largest fundraising event of the year. The drawing will be held live, online, in lieu of the annual dinner dance. Tickets are $100. They make great stocking stuffers! Contact Rick by cell, 917-345-3700 or email, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Knowing Rick, he’ll probably sell fractional tickets so if you don’t have $100 but still want to get in, ask Rick!

Closings have commenced on the new 116 condos on Beach 116th Street and people have started moving in! There will be new life on that end of the block and the whole area will flourish. Best wishes to the new owners!

Our hearts go out to the Mullen family this week. Cristin Mullen, just 35, died last week. An active runner, she had been battling epilepsy and succumbed to cardiac arrest. The Santa Shuffle was dedicated to her this year and the family plans to hold a memorial service next July. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Cristin to Autism Speaks, 1060 State Road, Princeton, NJ 08540.
