Happy Easter.

As of April 6, any New Yorker over 16 years of age will be able to get the vaccine. This news followed the Biden directive that all states make the COVID-19 vaccine eligible to all residents by no later than May 1 of this year. According to some projections, almost the entire U.S. population will be fully vaccinated by late July.

The Rockaway Times Photo Contest is open for a couple more weeks. You are allowed to submit up to four photos. You might have a great pic of the Eifel Tower or Grand Canyon but judges are looking for photos that spell, feel, shout Rockaway! A picture of friends enjoying the beach or local establishment; a boardwalk scene; a ferry shot that’s unique; wildlife. You get the idea. Surfers and sunsets are cool, but you can bet the competition will be tough. The weather is turning nice – get out there and take some shots!

The NYC Ferry system is heavily subsidized (so are most modes of transportation) and mayoral candidates are being asked for their positions on the current fare and service. The City, a non-profit online news service, asked twelve candidates about the ferry and their responses can be found at thecity.nyc/22330081/meet-your-mayor-nyc. A host of other issues are addressed as well. If you’re trying to learn where candidates are on issues, this is a good resource.

The City did not have responses from Paperboy L Prince who wants to “take back the city with love,” according to the candidate’s campaign website and social media outlets. According to a tweet from Paperboy, the nonbinary candidate has gotten enough signatures to be on the ballot in June.

MTA is taking its toll. New toll rates will be in effect at MTA Bridges and Tunnels beginning April 11, 2021. Local bridges will be going up to $2.45 from $2.29 for E-ZPass users. The resident discount for the Cross Bay bridge will remain. For more information, please visit https://new.mta.info/2021-mta-tolls  and select "Mid-Tier Toll FAQs." Please ensure your E-ZPass Tag is properly mounted. Additional E-ZPass Tags and adhesive strips are available through the 'Tolls NY' mobile app, available for free on the Google Play and Apple App Stores.

Speaking of the MTA, they know it’s crazy, too. They’re just not sure how to fix it. We’re talking about the A train going to Lefferts Blvd or the A Train that goes to Mott Avenue or the A train that goes to Rockaway Park. Why not just give trains with different destinations their own letters? Well, it’s partly because of those Brooklyn and Manhattan people. When we asked the MTA about trains having unique letters they said: ““NYC Transit planners have been thinking for some time how to improve clarity for our customers in Queens while avoiding confusion for customers in two other boroughs. Digital technology on newer train models makes it easier to re-label trains at terminal stops and our planners are taking those capabilities into account as they study this matter.” We know about MTA studies. They take longer than the A train.

We were happy to hear Hot Yoga is back. Safety protocols are in place at the studio on Beach 116th Street. The yoga scene in Rockaway is thriving and Anita Ruderman is a big reason why. She’s been making yogis sweat since….? How long’s it been, Anita? Must be twenty years, give or take.
