It might be the easiest raffle ticket in town to sell if we believe Rick Horan. The Graybeard tells us one little mention in The Rockaway Times made his tickets into hot cakes. The Pot of Gold raffle, which supports The Graybeards, the non-profit which has done so much for Rockaway through the years, is expected to be another bonanza. Last year’s winner-take-all prize was more than $190,000. If you or you and a couple of friends want to play (and help a great organization!) you can contact The Graybeards directly or call Rick Horan at 917-345-3700 and he’ll get a raffle ticket to you. A ticket is $100. A hundred bucks for a chance to win 200Gs, not bad.

“White Americans must recognize that justice for black people cannot be achieved without radical changes in the structure of our society.” That is a quote from Martin King Jr’s. last book Where Do We Go From Here. That quote was also pasted in big block letters to a green construction fence along Beach Channel Drive. The sign was soon removed. Putting up the sign and its removal both caused reactions online and elsewhere. No matter the message, we think using someone else’s personal property in such a way is wrong. No matter the message.

We know there’s stuff to do when the weather’s nice, this is Rockaway after all. Well, thanks to the Buglalou music series there’s a reason to shed those hibernations instincts. The music series is a lot more than just hiring a band. Keith Bugsy Goldberg goes above and beyond and makes these shows true events. See Page 12 for some of the upcoming shows.

In 2020, The Rockaway Times wrote about a new family show called Surf Guard launched on YouTube under the channel, SurfGuardTV set on a West Coast beach (with some Rockaway influence). For Season 2, they split the season between filming in San Diego and right here in Rockaway. Lou Harris of The Black Surfing Association played a major character and the filmmakers filmed a lot at Beach 84th street. Search “Surf Guard TV” on Youtube for the latest.
