The opening of the steel girder center lift span inlet bridge, from Brooklyn’s Flatbush Avenue extension over to Riis Park, made life a little easier for west enders and Rockaway Pointers. Dubbed the Marine Parkway Inlet Bridge back then, “Gil Hodges Memorial” was added to honor a great Brooklyn Dodger and New York Mets baseball player and manager. A municipal ferry service was discontinued in 1937.

Katie Lucev is the daughter of the late Rockaway Beach Historian, Emil R. Lucev, Sr. (1933-2018)
