All at once the feeling changed on the peninsula. As it is every year. Yet always a pleasant surprise to me. And it’s all we all talk about. Settling in to the breeze, the sound of the waves on the shore, the neighbors and friends and visitors all out and greeting each other. Everything slows down in the summer. I open to observe all the little things around me. My senses open and awaken to feel the breeze, smell the ocean, touch the sand, hear the open air.
If there is any time during the year to take in some moments and relax, it is summer. No matter what happens, there is always the calm of the shoreline in the morning, and the sounds of the plovers and pretty soon the scurrying of the sandpipers. Experiencing these things without thinking is a form of meditation — an aware mind and a heart open to all that is around. And when the mind and heart can rest in contemplation, the inner landscape gains a spaciousness sometimes otherwise constricted. You can see it as the open beach and ocean in front of you — spaciousness — rather than a lot of buildings and cement—constriction.
The light of the sun stays with us into the evening, which is a blessing for those of us who have day commitments. The evening is a different experience as if the day has opened and is going toward the closing of the night. Whatever is your experience at whatever time of day, it is THE time to stop, be present and take it all in.
Summer is the time to find peace in simple things. The really simple things. Summer is the time to think about what is really important to you in your life. Summer is the time to acknowledge the world as it is and send a big spacious heart to those who need it. Summer is the time to take stock of the rest of the year and decide what should be carried in to the fall and next year. Summer is the time to just be. Summer is the time to make fresh mint tea or fresh lemonade and sit in the shade and enjoy it. Summer is the time to discover something new and different—whatever that may be. Summer is the time to acknowledge the sun as the “grower” of plant life around us. Without the sun there is no life. Summer is the time to take a bike ride. Summer is the time to make pesto from the basil plants that are becoming enormous. Summer is the time to be outside at night and look up at the brilliant stars and constellations. Summer is a time to wake up early because the sun beckons you.
Summer is a time…Whatever summer is to you, make it happy and simple and nourishing to your body, mind and heart.
May you be happy. May you be free. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
