Be Well Be Happy

Labor Day has come and gone and I hope you managed some beach time for yourself. If not, typically September is a beautiful month here in the Rockaways. For myself, there are always so many changes in September and I welcome them all. Our schedule changes with the new school year. We begin to see new students come back to yoga after a summer outdoors. It’s really special to see all the changes that will happen with each year. Some good, some not so good.

Beach yoga was one of the big highlights of my summer, mostly because I met so many new people from all walks of life. Taking time to simply listen, be present and get to know someone is a gift. 

Everyone has a story and some people deal with much suffering in their lives. When they come to yoga, they are looking for healing. I am very aware of their journeys and do my best to offer a balanced practice encouraging peace and calm. It is an honor and pleasure to have this opportunity from the Parks Department to offer free yoga on the beach.

When I first started teaching on the beach eight years ago, I did not have a lot of experience, but soon, the students who attended the classes would teach me how to teach a basic hatha yoga class to all levels. Mostly, I would teach to the new student who I would want to like yoga and feel good about herself/himself. Very difficult to teach 100 students and know their pains or resistance, and also to teach the advanced student who has a daily practice and comes to beach yoga for the great energy and beauty. It is quite an uplifting experience for me as a teacher. I always walk away in awe of the gracious students who are always so grateful. For everyone out there who ventured out to beach yoga, thank you.

Teaching back at the studio is always a gift. If you have never been to Ocean Bliss Yoga Studio, you must try a class. We have a very special place in the Belle Harbor Yacht Club on the 3rd floor. It’s heaven on earth for all who enter.  We are blessed to share this space and we welcome all levels. Our classes are diverse, and for me the advanced student is usually the gentle student who moves slowly with a keen awareness.

I believe to have a balanced body and mind, you need to modify your workout/yoga classes. Our bodies have so many complexities and with every contraction, we need lengthening of our muscles. The more I practice yoga, the more I want to learn about every aspect of the practice. Breath work takes priority in most classes. Moving the body in an organic motion is of utmost importance. Keep moving even if it’s only your fingers or toes. Let your breath initiate any movement. Let the conversation between your body and mind begin with your breath. I can guarantee you that positive changes will happen for you and everyone around you. Whatever you are feeling inside is projected outwards.
