On Friday, June 23, all are welcome to remember and celebrate the life of Dylan Smith with a memorial paddle out.
Smith, a lifeguard and surfer, was known for going out on his surfboard on the night of Hurricane Sandy to rescue several of his neighbors from their burning homes around Beach 130th Street. Just a few months later, he died while surfing on December 23, 2012. He was 23.
Since his passing, friends, family and the community have joined together to remember this hometown hero, with a memorial paddle out. On June 23, at around 6 p.m., all are welcome to bring a board and participate in the paddle out or watch from the shore on Beach 86th Street. There will be t-shirts for sale. All proceeds will go to FACES (Finding a Cure for Epilepsy and Seizures).
