Beer for Whales

Want to whale watch and get a free beer out of it? Gotham Whale is looking for citizen scientists. Gotham Whale monitors whales within the New York City area, but they can’t keep track of every one. That’s where you come in. Whale season is about to begin, so if you see something, say something, and you may get a free beer.

If you see a whale, dolphin, seal or other large sea creature in local waters, take some notes or even pictures. Write down the date and time, the location, the type of sea mammal you see, and some behaviors you may notice, like feeding, breaching, lunging, tail slapping, etc. If you see a humpback whale, be sure to observe its tail markings, as these markings, like fingerprints, help identify the whale.

Fill out the form at with your findings or send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. You can also call Paul at 718-938-2067 if you have any information or questions.

In exchange for your help as a citizen scientist, you can get a free beer. Flagship Brewing, Kennedy’s, Reel, Moustache Brewing and Port Jeff Brewing Co. are just some of the sponsors of this program.

If you want to get a closer look at these amazing creatures in their natural habitat, take a ride on American Princess Cruises. Their whale tours begin on May 5. They’re currently hosting seal watching tours through the end of April. Visit for more info.
