Park Police Rescue Alligator in Fort Tilden

See you later, alligator. That’s what someone must’ve thought when they dropped off a four-foot alligator in Fort Tilden last week.

On Friday, April 20, United States Park Police(USPP) officers responded to a call of a reptile abandoned in Fort Tilden. A park visitor walking by happened upon the alligator inside of a fish tank and called USPP. USPP Officers Staunton and his training Officer Pitt responded over. When they arrived, the officers found that the alligator had escaped the fish tank and was attempting to make a getaway.

The officers were able to corral the alligator and get it back into the tank. They used police tape as a makeshift  lid to keep the alligator secured in the tank and then transported it to a NYC Animal Control Center in Brooklyn, where the alligator will be looked after and returned to its natural habitat.
