Chili Contest Heats Up the Rock

Jessica Luina is chili queen. The Community Liaison for Councilman Donovan Richards’ office was named the winner of the 100 Precinct Community Council’s Chili Cook-Off for the second year in a row.

The 9th Annual Chili & Mac-n-Cheese Cook-off, the 100 Precinct Community Council’s biggest fundraiser of the year, was a huge success! Bellies were full from chili and for the first time this year, macaroni and cheese, feet were dancing to the beats of DJ Eddy Pastore and smiles were seen around the Knights of Columbus as many won raffle prizes and the cook-off champs were crowned.

Jessica Luina’s chili once again came on top, but the Rockaway Beach Civic Association put up a delicious bowl that landed them second place this year. The judges, 100th Precinct Captain Janice Holmes, Wave Editor Mark Healey and local activist John Cori were given the tough job of tasting all of the entries as judges and picking their favorites. However, the general public also got to have their say and voted for RBNY Physical Therapy’s chili as the People’s Choice winner.

For the first time, macaroni and cheese dishes were also in the running. Last Stop Gourmet Shop took home first place for their mac-n-cheese, followed by the Knights of Columbus in second place. For People’s Choice, the crowd chose the FDNY EMS DOT entry.

Kudos to President Joe Young, Vice President Kathy Keavey and the rest of the 100 Precinct Community Council for a successful event. Lew Simon, Maureen McGee, Kathleen Selig, Jean Daouphars, the NYPD Explorers and leaders and Community Affairs Officer Maurice Moore were also credited for being a big help. Next year will be the 10th anniversary of this great community event.
