A large group of friends, family, community members and fellow surfers came out to remember John. P. McGonigal on the 50th anniversary of his death. As written in last week’s story in The Rockaway Times, McGonigal was a local surfer who was killed during the Vietnam War on May 13, 1968. On Sunday, May 13, many came out for a wreath-laying ceremony at McGonigal’s tree at Memorial Circle, followed by a prayer service by McGonigal’s memorial outside of the St. Francis de Sales rectory on Beach 130th Street.
