Mother Nature has been trying her best to drown the Rockaway Little League spring season with the constant rain. But we've been persevering. Last week's rain wiped out the schedule on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. That made a total of 33 rainouts this season as of this writing. Everyone at the league agrees they've never before seen a season with weather like this. But it will take more than that to stop the hardy players, coaches, parents and volunteers of Rockaway Little League. Makeup games have been scheduled during the Memorial Day weekend and the playoff schedule has been revised to fit in all the makeup games and allow for a full season.

The games may have been limited in quantity this past week, but not in thrills, fun and excitement. In Minor Boys action, the Belle Harbor Yacht Club Rockies kept their hold on first place with a tight 4-1 victory over the third-place American Legion Post #272 Cardinals. The Empire Unlimited Angels kept pace in second place in another close game, 3-2 over the Bartoli Chiropractic Athletics.

In the Pee Wee Sr division, the Zwerling Opthamology Orioles, Rockaway Midshipmen Fearless Z Blue Jays and Breezy Point Lumber Cardinals are locked in a tight race for first place as they are all within 1/2 game of each other. The Walsh Management Angels, Servpro of NW Brooklyn Pirates and A.O.H. Division 21 Athletics are only a few games back and poised to make a move at the top.

In Major Boys action, the Denis  S. O'Connor Inc. Giants continued at the top of the division with an action-packed 11-7 win over the DriveSafe Auto Center Orioles.

Excitement continues in girls’ softball as the Walsh Properties Eagles and Rockaway W.I.S.H. Clippers are in a virtual tie for first place in Minor Girls after the Eagles’ thrilling 7-6 victory over the Laquila Group Hornets. And on the Major Girls side, the second-place Graybeards Blazers had a productive week with 28-7 win over the Lola Star Pioneers and a 13-7 win over the Knights of Columbus 2672 Wildcats. But the Lana's Loft Bobcats thrilling 18-14 victory over the Blazers kept them in first place by a game.

With a little over two weeks remaining in the regular season, there promises to be a lot of excitement in all the divisional races. But keep in mind that everyone makes the playoffs and they are double elimination format so all the runner-ups have an excellent chance of competing for the championship.

And let's not forget all the pure joy of baseball and softball that takes place in the non-competitive divisions on field #1 at Fort Tilden. Hats off to all the players in Pee Wee Girls softball, Tee Ball and Pee Wee Jr baseball. You won't find a cuter or more joyous scene anywhere.

Rockaway Little League photo day sessions, which also had to be rescheduled because of all the bad weather, will take place Thursday May 31, Saturday June 2 and Sunday June 3. Teams will receive notices of their scheduled time slot.
