So what’s with the machinery and hoses? Well, it’s not a mini beach replenishment project (though we had our hopes up!). The Parks Department tells us it’s the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) “filling the geotubes underneath the concession islands.” Geotubes are bags made out of geotextile fabric that are filled with sea sand to fight erosion. The concession areas need this extra protection because they were not rebuilt like the rest of the boardwalk after Sandy.
