In a checkered week of more rain, with a little sun and a touch of chill for Sunday, Rockaway Little League (RLL) continued to swing into another week of softball and baseball play at Ft. Tilden. The highlight of the week was RLL’s mid-season celebration of All-Star Games. Players were selected from each of our competitive divisional teams to face-off each other in our very well-attended, fun-filled spectacular. The true heroes of the day were RLL’s grounds crew, headed by John Duggan and Matt Piccione, who after early morning torrential rainstorms, were able to prepare the fields so the kids could play their games. Thanks, guys!

In Major Boys’ action, James Youssef pitched a complete game with 13 strikeouts for the L. Mahoney Real Estate Rockies. Jayden McMilleon went 3-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Brendan Armour went 3-4 with a triple and three RBIs. Ben Gressel went 2-3 with a walk and two RBIs and Seamus Mack went 2-4 with two RBIs. The overall score of the game was 10-2 over the Delmar Pizza MJB Reds. Great effort, boys!

Minor Boys’ saw the Empire Unlimited Angels win 14-0 win over the American Legion Post #272 Cardinals. The Cardinals came back strong a few days later, winning their Saturday game against the Class Act Photo MNB Orioles in a score of 20-17, and then the Cardinals finished out their weekend with a 1-0 win, once again, over the Orioles. Hang tough Orioles! Lastly, the Storage Fox Diamondbacks won 11-10 against the Bartoli Chiropractic Athletics.

In Minor Girls’ competition, The Laquila Hornets stung the Walsh Property Eagles last Thursday in a 5-4 victory. Fantastic pitching by Hornets pitchers, Hayden Hutchby and Annabelle Tallon, backed by the stellar fielding of Cate Urcioli, Aria Tomassetti, Julliette Tallon, Niamh Tubridy and Charlotte Moriarity, and key hits by Maraid Fitzgerald, Mary McManus and Fiona Murphy served the Eagles their second loss of the season.

The Eagles came back on Saturday to defeat the Rockaway WISH Clippers in a pitching gem of their own. Starting pitcher Siobhan O'Sullivan struck out eight batters in three innings. She was followed by middle-reliever, Michaela Gennaro, who struck out four, and closing pitcher, Gina Rock, who struck out three in a row in the last inning. Katie Flanagan extended her hitting streak to three games. After hitting a double to drive in a run, Lauren Owens stole a would-be home run from the Clippers with a spectacular catch in left-field.
