On Friday, June 1, another dead humpback whale washed up on Rockaway’s beaches. The fairly decomposed creature washed up in Fort Tilden, close to the Silver Gull Beach Club. National Parks Service relocated the whale and cordoned it off as they awaited the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) to show up the next day to perform a necropsy. AMCS found that the male whale was 27-feet long, approximately three to five years old, and it had evidence of a vessel strike. This is the 5th large whale AMCS has responded to this year, and the 4th humpback whale. All of these animals had evidence of vessel strike.
