Community Boathouse to Open June 30

Ready, set, paddle! The new Community Boathouse on the bayside on Beach 88th Street will officially open on Saturday, June 30.

The new boathouse is stocked with single and double sit-on-top kayaks, plus stand up paddleboards, paddles and personal flotation devices, all available for use, for free. The Community Boathouse is brought to you by the same folks that run the Gateway Boathouse in Riis Landing. It is run by a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide residents and visitors an opportunity to explore Jamaica Bay under their own power and at no cost.

On Saturday, June 30, you can check out the new Community Boathouse, currently operating out of two shipping containers, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Don’t forget to bring your bathing suit so you can get on the water!  There will be
walk-up paddling all day long, weather permitting, no reservations required.

Both the Community Boathouse and the Gateway Boathouse are staffed entirely by volunteers who provide free safety and paddling training, and lead regularly scheduled tours from morning to sunrise. Programming opportunities are limited only by the weather and the availability of volunteers.  This is a community-funded endeavor, so individuals and organizations are needed to make it successful.  If interested in participating, stop by or contact Rick Horan at This email address is being protected from spambots. Community Boathouse is operating in conjunction with NYC Parks, on the future site of Bay Breeze Park. This 1.9-acre waterfront property is now in the early stages of design. For more information, check out
